“We are only lightly covered with buttoned cloth…” is a quote from Virginia Woolf’s novel The Waves, and it speaks to the fragility of identity and the illusion of social order. It also refers, quite literally, to the fabric and thread used to create these works.
This series explores the fluidity and porousness of identity. Each face and figure is stitched onto layers of fabric and paper, intentionally constructed to feel both familiar and unsettling. Like a wave, the images ripple across the surface. Water appears in every image, as a lake, a beach, a bathing suit, or simply as breath. Lives rise and recede like waves, each distinct for a moment yet part of one enduring sea. Memory gives life its meaning even as time carries everything away.
